Heuristic Evaluation

Project Case Study :: Investigation
Case Study Overview

The client technically had two separate applications for the same student experience – the desktop and iPad tablet. This was one of the major problems they had scaling is because they had two separate products that they had to update that had lots of functionality differences.

With any existing platform that needs to be updated, I do an in-depth heuristic evaluation. I prefer the Nielsen Norman Group’s 10 Usability Heuristics method.

Rating Score

For each set of criteria for all major screens of the tablet app, I assigned a score to the major principal offenders.

The Criteria

I found this criterion within the Neilson Norman Group Heuristic evaluation methods. It is widely used as broad rules of thumb for guiding design decisions since their original introduction in 1994.

The Results

This is the scorecard for the experience on the tablet. As you can see there is not a lot of positive scoring. This also meant a lot of opportunities to create a better experience!

Individual Scoring

For each major area of the application, I provided a score sheet and diagram of red-line feedback for parts of the interface to share the insights with the clients. Beside each red-line item, I labeled the offending principles, it was often where more than 1 principle item was offended.

They admitted that they were blind by how much the interface created a poor user experience.

Results & Outcomes

These findings familiarized us with the application and gave us the primary user stories we needed to include or modify in the new product. The exercise also gained us trust with the clients in our expertise with honest feedback.
I personally love studying bad user experiences, it’s a great educational opportunity and it’s fun to discover those laughable interactions that make you cry-laugh.
