Night-time instructor for web design-related courses. Created curriculum for two classes, Designing With WordPress and Mobile App Design, and co-created the UX/UI class, which all became required classes for the Web Design degree. Assist the Co-program Coordinator with educational strategies and student engagement for the Web Design Program.

Excellence in Teaching Award  ::  The MCC Institute for the Culinary Arts sought out assistance for a mobile app concept to deliver enrichment and palate development to both our students and the community. Under my coordination, culinary students, design students, and development students partnered together for two school quarters to create the app concept. This provided real-world experiences for students and collaboration for a real product between three departments within the college. After this ambitious experiment was concluded, I was awarded by my colleagues an Excellence in Teaching Award.

Create and implement accessibility standards company-wide. Collaborate with cross-functional remote teams in an agile environment.

While still in college, gained immediate real-world client experience and began to practice early principles of UX design and product development before graduating. Also designed and built hand-coded websites or modified WordPress applications, and designed interactive mobile applications. My biggest contribution was to product development for on-campus bus transportation tracking. 

How I Got My Start  ::  In my Junior year of college, I felt my education didn’t offer enough web design classes. I took the initiative to learn on my own while working within this incubator populated with students. We partnered with University staff members to create digital applications for clients of the community, which included local start-ups, entrepreneurs, and non-profits.

One project we implemented was a campus app with real-time locations of buses en route to buildings across campus. The bus experience was a major bottleneck to students transitioning across campuses which the app help relieved student frustration and improved transportation between peak hours of school days.

Small town girl got an upgrade. I transferred my junior year to the big city of Omaha at UNO’s Visual Design program where I still didn’t know what I wanted to do but knew I would find it here. There I tried film, printmaking, sculpture, hand lettering, and even thought about switching to creative writing. I seemed to be at a loss partway through my junior year.

However, a casual announcement from my academic advisor solidified my fate. He’d said there was a web design position for an incubator on campus. None of the other designers seemed to be intrigued and were even scared to apply to such a difficult realm of design. It was there in that position I discovered I was a web designer and started practicing product design.

Here I learned the basic principles of design through the graphic design program. I was also introduced to coding for the first time through an elective class. When the class was over I said, “Well that was fun, but I don’t see web design or coding in my future.” I think we know how that turned out.
